Description:

John McCrady (American/New Orleans, 1911-1968), "Christmas Near Oxford, Mississippi", 1949, gouache on board, unsigned, "Caller-Times Art Exhibit and Sale" label, "Arts & Crafts Club" stamp and handwritten authentication inscription by Mary Basso McCrady en verso, 19 1/4 in. x 26 1/4 in., frame enhanced by the artist. accompaniedby a copy of the letter of authentication dated Dec. 8, 1980, signed by Mary Basso McCrady. Note: The viscous clouds, the abandoned automobile, and the twisted tree in this 1949 gouache are quintessentially American motifs often used by McCrady referencing man and his place in the universe. The composition here was explored again by McCrady in a 1965 carbon acrylic work, “Christmas Eve,” included in his 1975 retrospective exhibition. The painting offered here is one of the first of McCrady’s spiritual works which does not rely on mysticism or fantasy, but conveys the sentiment in a direct narrative manner.
