Lot 569
John Neagle (Philadelphia, 1796-1865, active New Orleans, early 1820's), 'William J. Burns', oil on canvas, accompanied by a facsimile of the signature, dated and inscribed 'To Wm. J. Burns, Esq My savior in New Orleans-J. Neagle 1824' from the verso prior to relining, 25 in. x 30 in., in a period giltwood frame. E3000-5000 Provenance: Collection of Gretchen and Alonzo Lansford, New Orleans. Note: John Neagle became one of the prominent and highly recognized portrait artists working in Philadelphia in the early nineteenth century. After studying and apprenticing with several artists, Neagle studied with the famed American portrait artist Thomas Sully, who influenced his style and use of color. Early in his career, Neagle made a painting trip to the South, and traveled to Kentucky in 1818 and then to New Orleans from 1819 to 1820. Evidently during his travels to New Orleans, Neagle became acquainted with Williams J. Burns and painted the portrait upon his return to Philadelphia. In 1826, Neagle married Thomas Sully's stepdaughter.
