John Steuart Curry (American, 1897-1946), 'John Brown', lithograph, pencil-signed lower right, sight 15 in. x 11.75in., attractively matted with linen in a silver gilt frame. Provenance: Saunders Fine Art, Stone Mountain, Georgia, 1986. Note: Along with Benton and Wood, John Steuart Curry was one of the most prominent artists in America during the 1920s-30s. With the Depression, the art establishment moved away from the European avant garde; Curry himself turned inward using social realism to examine the plight of all Americans through his focus on the struggle of his native Kansans to make a living through hard physical labor, adverse living conditions and battered by harsh weather. His lithograph of abolitionist John Brown and full- scale mural of the same subject is one of five murals begun in 1937 for the state capital in Topeka. While today considered one of his most famous works, at the time, the historical subject of 'Bleeding Kansas' remained a controversial one for many in the state, and produced a polarizing effect causing state legislators to prohibit their completion.
