  • Notes: Note: Celebrated New Orleans artist John T. Scott was highly influenced by the culture and music of the Afro-Caribbean cultures; these inspirations led not only to his work being referred to as "optical jazz", but also to the title of his retrospective at the New Orleans Museum of Art: Circle Dance. The term Circle Dance refers to a type of dance performed by a group and most commonly performed in a circle. Although these types of dances are traditional to groups throughout the world, the African and Caribbean cultures that so influenced the music, dancing, and culture of the Southern United States are also the cultures that most profoundly affected John T. Scott in his sculptures and prints. The 1992 recipient of the "Genius Grant" from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, John T. Scott has long been noted as one of New Orleans' most prominent artists, an honor that has lived on past his death. The carpentry skills he learned from his father and the embroidery techniques learned from his mother certainly fueled Scott's interest in the arts from an early age; these early-learned crafts were again put to use in the wooden sculpture presented here. This particular piece also fits Scott's oeuvre theoretically; much of his art incorporates movement, whether kinetic or implied.
