Description:

John Wilson Carmichael (English, 1800-1868), "Whitby Harbour", oil on newsprint adhered to canvas, 19 in. x 26 in., unsigned, in a modern wood frame.

  • Notes: Note: Carmichael was born and raised in Newcastle-on-Tyne, a major British shipbuilding region. Following in his father's footsteps, he apprenticed with a ship builder. This early training gave him the working knowledge of ship construction that he employed in his later artistic endeavors. While employed as a shipwright, Carmichael began to draw and paint in his spare time. In 1824, he decided to concentrate solely on painting. The newsprint on which the present lot was painted is dated 1823, making this one of the artist's early works, likely created while he was still working on a ship. It has the smooth finish, clear colors, strong lines, and attention to detail for which Carmichael was known. These were stylistic attributes favored by the Royal Academy, and he was soon a popular exhibitor there. Carmichael exhibited his seascapes at the Royal Academy, British Institution, Suffolk Street, and the Northern Academy of Arts in his hometown. He worked as a documentary painter during the Crimean War for the Illustrated London News. References: Bénézit. Dictionnaire des Peintres, Librairie Grund, 1976, vol. II, p. 532 Wood.
