Description:

Joseph B. O'Sickey (American/Ohio, 1918-2013), "Porch in Light Key with Climbing Rose", 1987, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, "Kennedy Galleries, Inc., NYC" label with title en verso, 48 in. x 60 in., framed. Provenance: Kennedy Galleries, Inc., New York. Note: A member of the Cleveland School - a noted group whose artists bridged tradition and modernism - Joseph O’Sickey’s career as an artist and teacher spanned more than six decades. His work was influenced by French artists such as Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard, though he rejected the moniker of Impressionist—or Pointillist or Expressionist. “My work,” he said, “is a direct response to the subject. I believe in fervor and poetic metaphor. I try to make each color and shape visible and identifiable within the context of surrounding colors and shapes. A yellow must hold its unique quality from any another yellow or surrounding color, and yet read as a lemon or an object, by inference. It does not require shading or modeling—the poetic evocation is part of the whole.” After serving in World War II, O’Sickey spent a year teaching at Ohio State University. There he had a two-person show with another young painter, Roy Lichtenstein, who became a lifelong friend. In 1968, O’Sickey and his wife moved into a home in rural Twin Lakes, near Kent, Ohio, an idyllic retreat with a lush, walled garden which would provide an endless source of inspiration for the artist, as seen in the work offered here. O’Sickey’s paintings, drawings and watercolors have been seen in more than 80 group and 54 one-man shows. Three of those solo exhibitions took place at New York’s Kennedy Galleries of American Art.
