Lot 281
Description:
Joseph Boggs Beale (American/Pennsylvania, 1841-1926), "Battle of Gettysburg", watercolor on paper board, signed "Jos. B. Beale" lower left, sight 13 3/4 in. x 36 in., attractively matted and framed.
- Notes: Note: An illustrator and the great-grandnephew of Betsy Ross, Joseph Beale painted detailed scenes of the 19th century, including images of the Civil War; he had volunteered for service in order to make sketches for the magazine Leslie's Weekly. His scenes of Civil War battles, such as the present lot, provide insight into the world of war in the 19th century from the point of view of a soldier on the field, making Beale an important chronicler of American history.
