Description:

Joseph Durham, A.R.A. (British School, 1814-1877), 'Chastity', a large Parian figure, signed on edge of base at right, and dated 'Sep. 1 1865', titled on front edge, and stamped on left rear edge, 'Copeland N' [the month stamp], height 25 in., width 7.5in., depth 9 in. Note: This impressive figure, inspired by a celebrated passage in John Milton's poem 'Comus', is a reduction of Durham's life-size marble statue, completed in 1860 and exhibited that year at the British Institution and the Royal Academy of Arts.
