Joseph Jefferson (American-Louisiana, 1829-1905), 'Louisiana Bayou', oil on canvasboard, signed lower left, Russell Canvasboard stencil en verso, 13 in. x 9 in. E1200-1800 Note: Born into a theatrical family, Joseph Jefferson had distinguished careers as both an actor and painter. Jefferson worked as an actor throughout his childhood while at the same time assisting his father painting the scenic backgrounds for the plays. Already an acclaimed American actor, in 1865 he earned international fame in the role of 'Rip Van Winkle' which he debuted in England. Four years later, Jefferson purchased Orange Island located in the marshes of Iberia Parish. From his island home, Jefferson painted the swamps and bayous of the surrounding area.
