Description:

Joseph Solman (Russian/American, 1909-2008), "Sleeping Woman with Groceries on a New York City Subway", charcoal on paper, initialed "J.S." lower left, 13 1/2 in. x 10 3/4 in., framed. Provenance: "Joseph Solman, 50 Year Retrospective", Robert Brown Contemporary Art, Washington, D.C., 1985. Note: In the 1930s, Joseph Solman along with Mark Rothko was one of the founders of the nine person group of expressionist painters known as “The Ten.” He maintained a steadfast interest in figurative drawing and painting, even forming another art movement, Reality, in the 1950s in New York when abstract expressionism was particularly de rigueur. He said, “I have long discovered for myself that what we call the subject yields more pattern, more poetry, more drama, greater abstract design and tension that any shapes we invent.” One of his favorite places to sketch was in the subway on the way to and from his part-time job as a betting clerk at Aqueduct. He would often sketch his fellow riders on his pad of betting slips. In the lot offered here, Solman focuses on a sleeping rider who appears propped up by her bag of groceries. His appreciation for Honoré Daumier, the famous French caricaturist and painter, is evident in the confident, bold outlines of the woman’s facial features and hands. Sleeping figures were a favorite subject of his as he noted that they tended to “pose perfectly when they’re asleep.” Ref.: Packer, William. “Joseph Solman.” The Guardian.
