Jules Lion (American/Louisiana, 1810-1866), "Albert Du Bayet", lithograph, signed and dated "1860" in the plate, 8 1/2 in. x 7 in. E400-600 Provenance: Martha and Ray Samuel Collection, New Orleans. Note: A French-born free man of color, Jules Lion created a series of lithographs of prominent Louisianans of the day. Like many artists, Lion embraced the emerging medium of photography. He is credited with introducing the daguerreotype process to New Orleans. Reference: John Mah‚, Encyclopaedia of New Orleans Artists, 1718-1918, The Historic Orleans Collection, 1987, pp. 238-9.
