Montgomery (1778-1864)", lithograph, signed in plate lower left, remnant of label en verso, sheet 9 3/4 in. x 7 3/4 in., period frame Note: In the 1840s, the New Orleans free man of color Jules Lion began a series of lithographic portraits for a proposed book entitled "Notabilities de la Louisiane". The sitter, William W. Montgomery (1778-1864), moved to New Orleans at the time of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. A successful businessman, Montgomery was president of Branch Bank of the United States and the Bank of Louisiana. During the Battle of New Orleans, he served as a quartermaster of the Fourth Regiment Militia under Andrew Jackson. Montgomery married Marie Louise Pulchese Augustine Piver d'Elincourt and they had nine children.
