Julius Garibaldi "Gari" Melchers (American/Virginia, 1860-1932), "Marie, West Indian Woman", c. 1928, gouache on paper, signed lower right, labels en verso from the "Coggins Collection of American Art", "Morris Museum of Art", and Greenville County Museum of Art's exhibition, A Sense of Time and Place: Southern Works on Paper from the Morris Museum of Art, 1991, as well as Christie's East stickers, 19 1/4 in. x 13 in., framed Provenance: Christies' East Sale to Robert Powell Coggins Collection; by purchase to Southeastern Newspapers Corporation; by gift to the Morris Museum of Art. Note: The expatriate artist Gari Melchers returned to America in 1915 and purchased an 18th century estate outside of Fredericksburg, Virgina, known as Belmont. During a sketching trip to Savannah, Melchers traveled further south to the West Indies. There he painted this sketch of his favorite model, Marie, who he called Ma Petite.
