Description:

Knute Heldner (Swedish/New Orleans, 1877-1952), 'A Winter Day, Minnesota', oil on canvas, signed lower right and titled en verso, 28 5in. x 34 in., in a period frame. Note: At the age of seventeen, Knute Heldner came to America from his native Sweden working as a cabin boy aboard a ship. Heldner settled in the north woods of Minnesota. Working as a sheepherder, cobbler and cook in a lumber camp Heldner began to paint in his spare time. Eventually he studied two years at the Minneapolis School of Fine Art and attended the Art Student's League in New York City. His scenes of the lumber camp and impressionist vistas of Minnesota were particularly well received. With the fanfare following the selection of one of his paintings by the Republican Committee of Minnesota as a gift for President Harding, Heldner decided to devote all his time to painting. In the winter of 1923, Heldner and his young wife Colette first visited New Orleans. Eventually the couple would settle in New Orleans, but continue to spend the summers in Minnesota.
