Description:

Knute Heldner (Swedish/New Orleans, 1877-1952), "Singing by the Mississippi River", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 40 in. x 32 in.

  • Notes: Note: The Swedish born artist Knute Heldner was an integral part of the bohemian group of artists and writers who lived and worked in the French Quarter during the mid twentieth century. Many of the artists, including Heldner and his wife Colette, displayed and sold their artwork along the cast iron fence surrounding the Place d'Armes in Jackson Square. To appeal to the tourist trade and to support his young family, Heldner painted engaging views of the tropical bayous of Southern Louisiana. The painting "Singing by the Mississippi River" reveals Heldner's depth as an artist. In the background is the busy traffic along the Mississippi River and a conveyer belt employed to aid in the transport of freight. Heldner captured a moment when four African-American workers pause from their day of hard labor loading and unloading the cargo from the ships to sing together. In the lower right corner, a stray dog looks on as they sing.
