An American Late Classical Carved Mahogany Tester Bed, c. 1840-1850, probably New Orleans, stepped ogee tester, scrolled headboard centered by a shell cartouche, tapered posts with gothicized panels, conforming shaped rails, height 116 in., interior length 78 in., interior width 61 in Provenance: Sold in these rooms on June 2012 as lot 77. Note: The bed offered here is very similar in proportion and ornament to a tester bed at Rosalie, Natchez. The finely executed taffeta insert adorning this bed is an ideal juxtaposition to the rich mahogany veneers. Reference: Otto. American Furniture of the 19th c. fig. 365, p. 169.
