Lee (Emily) Godie (American, 1908-1995), "Portrait of Woman", felt tip marker and ink, signed upper left, 22 in. x 28 in. E300/500 Note: A homeless bag lady, Lee Godie began selling her self-proclaimed "French Impressionist" drawings on the steps outside of the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1960s. Godie earned a strong reputation and recognition as a self-taught artist. Her paintings have been included in the exhibitions "Outsider Art in Chicago" organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago in 1979 and "Artist Lee Godie: A Twenty-Year Retrospective" organized by the Chicago Cultural Center in 1993.
