Leon Ambroise Gauthier (French/Latin America, b. 1822-1880), "Portrait of a Gentleman in a Tropical Landscape with Hunting Dogs and Gun", oil on canvas, signed and dated "Cuba 1849" lower left, 45. 5in. x 34.5in., in a period giltwood frame. E4000-6000 Provenance: Collection of Anita Crozat Kohlsdorf of Bocage Plantation in Darrow, Ascension Parish, Louisiana. Note: A native Parisian, Gauthier studied at l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts through 1841. He exhibited landscapes, portraits and genre paintings at the academic Salons from 1844 to 1879, receiving an honorable mention in 1863. Another Gauthier portrait of a gentleman, dated c. 1853, is part of the corporate collection of the Banco de la Republica of Bogota, Columbia.
