Leon D. Pomarede (French, c. 1807-1892, active New Orleans 1830-69), "Landscape with Man Fishing", oil on canvas, signed lower left, 30. 25in. x 36.25in. E3000/5000 Note: Leon Pomarede arrived in New Orleans during the early 1830's and subsequently earned acclaim for his landscape, mural and panorama paintings. In 1841 Pomarede receiveda commission to paint three murals behind the main altar of St. Patrick's Church. With his partner T. E. Courtenay, he opened Pomarede's Original Panorama of the Mississippi River and Indian Life.The elaborate moving panorama featured painted views of the upper Mississippi River and was accompanied by music and performed readings.A Pomarade landscape painting was a gift from William Groves to the University of Southwestern Louisiana.
