Leyland Croft Smith (American/Alabama, b. 1910), "Gulls Above a Bayou Bordered by Cypress and Moss-Draped Oaks", pencil, chalk, and pastels on paper, signed in pencil at lower right, height 22 in., width 36 in , framed. E2500-3500 Note: The bayous and marshlands along coastal Alabama, inspired Opelika artist Leyland Croft Smith. Accepting of the modernist movement of the early and mid twentieth century, Smith successfully used representation and abstract elements in this painting. He exhibited with the Montgomery Museum of Art and his work is in the collection of the Opelika Court House and Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Note: The artist is represented in collection of Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, and was a member and exhibitor in the Alabama Art League, 1932.
