Description:

Louis-Alphonse David (French, 1798-1849), "Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette", watercolor miniature, signed "L. David" lower right, inscribed "Lafayette par L. David" en verso of backing, dia. 2 1/8 in., framed. Provenance: Baldwin Family Collection; thence by descent. Note: For his aid to the American militia during the American Revolution, particularly the crucial battle of Yorktown in 1781, the Marquis de Lafayette was awarded the Croix Saint-Louis by King Louis XVI. From that point, hundreds of portraits, engravings, and miniatures were created in his likeness. As early as the 1780s, this particular pose – bust length, left facing, in his American Revolution uniform and wearing the Croix Saint-Louis – was used for engravings in both France and America. Louis-Alphonse David, a student of the French painter Girodet, began studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1817. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1831-1849 and was known for portraits, genre scenes, and military scenes.
