Description:

Louis Marie Dominque Romain Robbe (Belgian, 1806-1887), "A Herdsman Calling Animals to Water", oil on canvas, signed lower right, label reading "Robbe, landscape, cattle" en verso, 14 in. x 17 1/4 in., in a modern carved and gilt-burnished frame.

  • Notes: Note: Robbe was born in the West Flanders town of Kortrijk where he originally studied to be a lawyer. Inspired by the works of such esteemed animaliers as Eugene Verboeckhoven (Belgian, 1798-1881) and Jean-Baptiste de Jonghe (Flemish, 1785-1844), Robbe began to concentrate on nature painting. In 1840 he moved to Brussels where he soon became an influential leader of the Belgian school of animal painting. Robbe was a sought after instructor and his students included his younger brother Henri Robbe and Joseph Stevens (1819-1892) the brother of Alfred Stevens. Robbe exhibited widely during his lifetime and received numerous awards. In 1843 he was made a Knight of the Order of Leopold - becoming an officer in 1863 - and in 1845 he was named a Chevalier e la Légion d'honneur. Reference: Bénézit.
