Lot 762
LOUISIANA/MARITIME HISTORY A noteworthy collection of telegrams and letters relating to the burning of Captain John W. Tobin's steamboat the J.M. White and the subsequent lawsuit against the crew dating from December 14, 1886 to January 10th, 1888. Included is a telegram to Captain Tobin from Captain John F. Muse of the Steamer St. John that relates "White burned last night at ten o'clock at Point Coupee, boat and cargo total loss I fear some lives are lost but none known." A handwritten letter from Tobin to Muse described in detail that the Judge Yoist prompted by a letter from W.F.L. Claiborne of Point Coupee has assigned a "Grand Jury to investigate the White disaster." Muse writes back "I beg to assure you that you sum unnecessarily excited about Col. Claiborne sensational letter. Confidentially, entre nous, the old gentleman is a newsmonger, and a panic creator-so is Yoist-." Also included are letters from the law offices of Wickliffe & Fisher, St. Francisville and A.C. Lewis, New Orleans relating to the case. A Western Union Telegram from Muse dated September 14, 1887 to Tobin succinctly stated "Case against officers White dismissed"; together with a vintage silver gelatin photograph of J.M. White with descriptive label noting the steamboat burned at Blue Store Landing, just above Bayou Sara, Dec. 15, 1886, sight 6.5in. x 8.5in., in a period wood frame. (15 pcs.)
