[LOUISIANA PLANTATION MAP Armant St. James Plantation, c. 1870, watercolor and ink on paper, showing details of acreage, buildings, forest and the Mississippi River, with decorative border incorporating title and compass point, framed, sight 45 in. x 34 in. E1500-2500 Provenance: Descended in the family of William Porcher Miles. Note: Armant Plantation was one of the thirteen Houmas Plantations in Ascension and Saint James Parishes owned by John Burnside. Burnside was able to retain ownership of the plantations after the Civil War because he was a British subject. William Porcher Miles (1822-1899) was born in Waterboro, S.C. He studied law and became mayor of Charleston in 1855. In 1857 he was elected to Congress and there championed Secession until his withdrawal in 1860. In 1863, Miles married Betty Beirne, daughter of Oliver Beirne, a wealthy planter in Virginia and Louisiana. After the Civil War, Beirne made him manager of the Houmas Plantations, which he had inherited from his friend John Burnside. Miles managed the plantations until his death in 1899.
