Description:

Louisiana School, late 18th/early 19th c., "Don Carlos Louis Boucher de Grand Pré (1746-1805)", watercolor miniature, unsigned, hand-written label with sitter identified en verso, sight 2 1/2 in. x 2 in., framed. Provenance: Estates of Milburn and Nancy Calhoun, owners of Pelican Publishing Company, New Orleans, LA. Note: Born in New Orleans in 1754, Charles Louis Boucher de Grand Pré (called Don Carlos under the Spanish government in Colonial Louisiana) descended from a French Acadian family. Grand Pré joined the New Orleans Militia in 1769, and in 1775, he transferred to the Louisiana Infantry Regiment, which was organized under General Alejandro O’Reilly on behalf of the Spanish government in 1770. Grand Pré rose to the rank of captain before serving as Commandant of Natchez, Mississippi from 1786-92. While in Natchez, Grand Pré built a home for his family called “Concord," which would later serve as the Governor’s Mansion for the first Governor of Mississippi, Don Manuel Gayoso de Lemos. Grand Pré then served as Lieutenant Governor of Ouachita, Louisiana in 1797 and was appointed Governor of Baton Rouge in 1798, a post he held until 1808. It was reported that Don Carlos de Grand Pré died in Havana, Cuba in 1809, predeceased by his wife but survived by many children, whose descendants later married into prominent Louisiana families.
