Description:

Luis Graner y Arrufi (Spanish/Louisiana, 1863-1929), "Harmony in Black and White", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 36 in. x 40 3/4 in., period frame. Provenance: Southern Museum Collection. Note: Luis Graner y Arrufi was a native of Barcelona, Spain, studied at the School of La Llojta until 1886, when he moved to Paris. Over the next eight years, he exhibited in Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, Munich, and Dusseldorf, before settling again in Barcelona. It was there that he married Dolores Guadiola in the Basilica de la Merced in 1899; the couple had three daughters. A celebrated painter by now, Graner became friends with the artist Antoni Gaudi; the two worked together to create Graner’s theatrical vision, the Sala Mercè, which housed musical, visual arts, and cinematic performances. While popular at first, the venture ultimately ruined Graner financially and the artist went back to painting. Graner and his family decided to move to the United States around 1910. Docking in New York in November of that year, he worked there as an artist with a studio in Upper Manhattan. Graner separated from Delores in 1911 and began a relationship with his model, Catherine “Kitty” Morrissey; eventually the two married and had two children. Traveling to San Francisco, Cuba, Brazil, and Chile, Graner attained the status of a prominent artist, where he attracted the attention of collectors and patrons, including Theodore Roosevelt. By 1914, Graner began wintering in New Orleans, and was listed in the 1917 City Directory with a studio on Dumaine Street near City Park. He would continue to paint in New Orleans during the winters until 1922. In 1923, Graner’s health deteriorated significantly. Although he lived another six years, his painting was greatly affected and did not receive the acclaim of his youth. Having abandoned his second wife, Luis Graner y Arrufi died in Barcelona in 1929. The paintings Graner created during his time in New Orleans have often been called his finest works. Scenes such as “Mistick Krewe of Comus Parade at Night,” from 1917, with its vibrant colors and loose brushwork, depict Graner’s adeptness at his craft. Although a quiet, intimate scene, the current lot similarly heightens the emotions of the viewer with its subtle, muted colors, and linear, impressionistic brushstrokes. Painted during an illness of his wife, Catherine, from which she was not expected to recover, this self-portrait shows the artist alongside his sleeping son who rests peacefully, unaware of the sadness and worry Graner himself feels. Happily, Catherine survived; however, this beautiful and haunting work remains to record a dark time in the artist’s life. Ref: Alcolea Albero, Fernando. “El pintor Luis Graner en America.
