(Indian/British, d. 1959, known active 1909-1940), "Midsummer: An Inland Sea", c. 1920s/1930s, oil on canvas, signed lower right, labeled with artist and title en verso, 48 in. x 72 1/4 in., original frame Note: Born in India, Madeleine Rachel Holmes Wells studied at the Westminster and London Schools of Art and was accepted to the Royal Academy in 1915. Wells maintained a studio in Kensington, and created a series of large scale allegorical paintings, including "Midsummer: An Inland Sea" (which may possibly be based on an idealized rendering of the Dalmatian Coast).
