Description:

American Sheraton Mahogany Bowfront Chest of Drawers, early 19th c., attr. to William Hook, Massachusetts, waterleaf carved turreted corners, four drawers flanked by reeded columns, turned feet, h. 42 1/2 in., w. 45 in., d. 21 in. Note: The overall design, waterleaf-carved and reeded corner posts, and bookmatched mahogany drawer fronts on this lot closely relate to a near identical chest of drawers attributed to William Hook or William Haskell sold in these rooms September 15, 2012 as lot 378. William Hook’s Sheraton-style furniture was highly sought after by leading families of Salem in the late 18th/early 19th century. A key feature of his work is the use of carved waterleaf capitals on reeded corner posts, which is seen on an attributed dressing table at the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem (124788.7) and also a mahogany work table (39.555), a dressing table (39.556), and a sideboard (38.67) at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
