Description:

American Federal Inlaid Mahogany Butler's Desk, early 19th c., attr. to Michael Allison, New York, fall-front escritoire drawer, above three graduated drawers, shaped base, "French" feet, h. 45 1/2 in., w. 45 1/2 in., d. 22 in. Note: A mahogany chest bearing Michael Allison’s (New York, 1773-1855) stenciled label with proportions and legs nearly identical those on this lot is held in the collection of the New York State Museum. The distinctive inlaid oval panels on the desk front of this lot are often an embellishment found on cases from the Allison workshop, including a butler’s desk at Boscobel in Garrison, NY.
