Lot 312
An Associated Set of Six Carved Mahogany or Tropical Hardwood Windsor Chairs, early-to-mid 19th c., probably Jamaica, one with partial label "William W. Ball, Montego Bay, Cabinet Maker and Turner", each with turned spindled back, shaped seat, splayed turned legs, stretchers Note: The light, strong and versatile form of the English Windsor chair made it ideal for 18th and early 19th-century British sea vessels where they were easily hoisted in the rigging when the decks were cleared. The Windsor chair was trasmitted to and adapted by furniture makers thoughout the Empire, including the Montego Bay examples shown here. An 1802 satirical print by Abraham James titled Smoking Society in Jamaica illustrates examples of the form. Reference: Antiquarian Jack Plane's blog Pegs and Tails December 1, 2012.
