Description:

Six American Classical Mahogany Side Chairs, c. 1835, attr. to Duncan Phyfe, New York, shaped backs, vasiform splats, bowed seats, splayed legs, h. 33 in., w. 17 1/4 in. Note: The specific curved back, yoke-shaped crest, pinched waist, and cabriole legs of these chairs closely relate to several pieces attributed to Duncan Phyfe, including a set of 16 side chairs made for his daughter Eliza Phyfe Vail between 1837-1840 (Kenny, et al. Another Phyfe side chair with an almost identical vasiform splat is conserved at the Merchant’s House Museum in New York (MHM 2002.2012). Ref.: Peter M. Kenny, et al.
