Description:

Important American Classical Brass Inlaid Ormolu-Mounted Marble and Rosewood Pier Table, early 19th c., attr. to Duncan Phyfe, New York, frieze with classical mounts, columnar supports with palmette cast capitals and bases, mirror back flanked by pilasters, incurvate plinth, carved foliate feet, h. 36 3/8 in., w. 42 1/4 in., d. 18 3/16 in. Provenance: Estate of Myra and Zimri Ball, Newport, TN. Note: A master craftsman and leader of the New York furniture trade during the early 19th century, Duncan Phyfe (1770-1854) became the source of sophisticated furniture notable for a unique blend of Neoclassical and English Regency styles. Phyfe’s ornamented pier tables, like the table offered in this lot, are considered by curators Peter M. Kenny and Michael K. Brown to be the zenith of his work. This pier table’s overall form, exotic rosewood veneers, ormolu mounts, and stamped brass borders relate directly to a table illustrated in Duncan Phyfe: Master Cabinetmaker in New York by Kenny and Brown, held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The table’s carved foliate feet relate to a work table also illustrated in Duncan Phyfe: Master Cabinetmaker in New York, from the collection of Richard Hampton Jenrette.
