Lot 253
Description:
[Mardi Gras] A New Orleans Carnival Parade Bulletin, Independent Order of the Moon, February 14th, 1888, "Flights of Fancy", Extra Moonshine, New Orleans, Louisiana, initialed "B" in plate lower right, designed by Daniel Anton Buechner (American/ New Orleans, 1856-1937), 28 in. x 42 in., unframed.
- Notes: Note: The New Orleans printmaker and designer Daniel Anton Buechner worked for the local firm of T. Fitzwilliam and Company. This company published large chromolithographs representing the Mardi Gras parades for The Picayune Newspaper including Mistick Krewe of Comus and Knights of Momus. Buechner worked independently on occasion, as when he designed this humorous and racially charged chromolithograph for the smaller and short-lived Independent Order of the Moon. The "B" in the lower right corner is unique in that it is the only signed bulletin in existence.
