On the reverse in pencil is an interesting P.S. "Great excitement in the theatre as the Duke of Edinburgh and PrincessElizabeth are in front tonight... I wont be able to see "G- Menagerie'as they won t allow me out of the theatre, what a bore..." E700-1000 Note: In June, 1948 one of the most enduring theatrical friendships was born. Tennessee Williams met Maria Britneva Lady St. Just at a party given in London by John Gielgud who was directing the first English production of "The Glass Menagerie". Shortly before the play opened, Williams travelled to Paris without informing anyone. Whilst in Paris there began an almost 40 year correspondence between the author and Maria. The present letter is an extremely rare example of Maria's correspondence to Tennessee Williams most of which has not survived. More importantly, it relates to the first letter written to Maria Britneva by Williams from Paris see Five O'Clock Angel, Lettersof Tennessee Williams to Maria St. Just, 1948-1983, p. 2
