Description:

Marie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi, 1890-1980), "Still Life of Japanese Magnolias", oil on canvas board, signed lower right, 16 in. x 20 in., in an ornate giltwood frame.

  • Notes: Note: Marie Atkinson Hull was a beloved and well respected member of the community of talented artists centered around Jackson, Mississippi in the mid twentieth century. Trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Art Student League, she married a Jackson architect and pursued her painting career. Hull's still life Southern flowers, as represented by this charming painting of Japanese magnolia in full bloom, proved to be popular among her local collectors. A believer in art as a continuous learning process, Hull's paintings evolved over time as she embraced the modernist movement.
