Description:

Marie Hull (American/Mississippi, 1890-1980), "Flamingos: A Three-Panel Folding Screen", oil on wood, signed lower right of right panel, overall 69 1/4 in. x 60 in, Note: In 1925, Marie Hull and her husband Emmett spent a year in St. Petersburg, Florida. Marie was inspired by the local flora and fauna and created a series of paintings depicting the various exotic birds. In this rare screen, she depicts colorful flamingoes reflected in the aqua blue water with willow tree branches draped overhead. Interestingly, this screen has an Art Nouveau aesthetic which would have been an important current fashion at the time. A masterful painting of flamingoes in the collection of the Fielding L. Wright Art Center at Delta State University in Cleveland, MS relates closely to the screen. Another important screen by Marie Hull painted with macaws was sold in these rooms, November 19, 2011, lot 141. Ref.: Levingston, Bruce, Bright Fields: The Mastery of Marie Hull: Jackson: Univ. Press of Mississippi, 2015.
