Description:

Marie Madeleine Seebold Molinary (American/New Orleans, 1866-1948), "Still Life of Chrysanthemums in a Vase", 1889, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, 20 in. x 26 in., period gilt frame. Provenance: Neal Auction Company, Dec. 9, 1995, lot 561. Note: Marie Seebold was an accomplished painter active in late 19th and early 20th century New Orleans. Seebold spent about five years studying in New York City under the American Impressionist William Merritt Chase whose influence is recognizable in the soft, delicate brush work of Seebold’s floral still life paintings. Chrysanthemums were a favored subject and one in which she excelled. The work offered here shows an arrangement of white and gold blossoms overflowing in a brown vase. An exceedingly large composition of chrysanthemums with the artist’s palette was sold in these rooms on December 5, 1998 and is now in the collection of the Louisiana State Museum.
