Description:

Marino Marini (Italian, 1901-1980), "A Military Camp: By the Washhouse", c. 1918/1924, oil on canvas, signed lower right, 18 1/4 in. x 23 3/4 in., inscribed (in English) en verso of stretcher "painted when 14 years old", in a later cove-molded frame.

  • Notes: Note: The very celebrated modern artist Marino Marini was born in the Tuscan town of Pistoia on 27 February 1901, and registered for the classes in painting under Galileo Chini at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence in 1917, at age 16 Notwithstanding the note written in pencil on the back of this stretcher (which clearly, being in English, represents a somewhat later tradition), the very strong likelihood is that Marini would have required at least a certain amount of training from Chini and his other instructors in the basic technique of oil paint - a notoriously difficult medium to handle confidently - before he would have been capable of the superb facility he shows in this painting. Given the subject matter, indeed, there is a significant ossibility that the present picture dates rather from his period of military service, which he discharged in 1924, just 5 years after the end of the First World War (when Marini was still only 23). By any index of quality, however, this is a very striking picture, combining brilliant colors astutely choreographed against a brilliantly painted white wall, conceived in a frieze-like alignment of uniformed figures. Its remarkably early date is reinforced by the fact that Marini had not yet settled on his iconic theme of the "Horse and Rider," which especially after the Second World War, came to represent the work with which he is so closely identified. After a long lifetime heaped with honors, Marini died at Viareggio on 6 August 1980 Reference: Silvia Lucchesi, "Marini, Marino," Grove Dictionary of Art, Jane Turner, ed., 34 vols., London, 1996, vol. 20, pp. 428-430.
