Description:
Marion Sims Souchon (American/New Orleans, 1870-1954), "The Devil in the Garden", oil on board, unsigned, artist's inventory number "529" en verso, 22 in. x 28 in., in an attractive modern frame.
- Provenance: Provenance : Gift of the artist; Private Collection. Note: In 1941 a Time Magazine article called Dr. Souchon "New Orleans' most original artist." Beginning his painting hobby late in life, he quickly developed a unique style employing bright patches of color and effusive brushwork. The work offered here, "The Devil in the Garden", is a quintessential example of Souchon's palette and technique. The devil's face is bright red against a vivid yellow background while green foliage and red blossoms frame the composition. In the Time article, Dr. Souchon was quoted, "I like my pictures red hot", a sentiment clearly expressed in this painting.
