Description:

Marvin Lipofsky (American, b. 1938), "Stockholm Series #11", c. 1989-1991, cut and sandblasted mold-blown glass, h. 14 in., w. 16 in., d. 12 in Note: Marvin Lipofsky is considered revolutionary in the field of American contemporary art glass. During the 1960s, Lipofsky studied under Harvey Littleton, the founder of the Studio Glass movement and director of the first hot glass program in America at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Littleton’s students included Marvin Lipofsky, Dale Chihuly, and Fritz Dreisbach, who were among the first generation of studio glass artists in America. Upon graduation, Lipofsky began training fellow studio artists and eventually founded the glass program at the University of California, Berkley, where he taught until 1972. Due to his contributions and advancements in the field of studio glass, Lipofsky received two National Endowment for the Arts grants in 1974 and 1976. For the past forty years, the artist has continued to work in the medium developing both as an artist and instructor. Befitting his prominence in the art community, Lipofsky’s works are included in over 100 public collections worldwide. In the United States, Lipofsky’s works can be found in the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, NY; Museum of Arts and Design, New York, NY; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA. Internationally, Lipofsky’s works can be found in the collections of the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris, France; The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, Japan; and Glasmuseum Frauenau, Frauenau, Germany. In the foreword to the catalog for the artist’s retrospective, “Marvin Lipofsky: A Glass Odyssey,” Corning Museum of Glass’s curator Tina Oldknow applauded Lipofsky “for his devotion to material and form. His non-objective vessels break apart and rearrange the blown glass mass while retaining the breathy, ephemeral quality that is one of the medium’s most intriguing characteristics.” This same ephemeral and strikingly organic quality can be seen in the work offered here, “Stockholm Series #11,” a mass of form that is connected by threads of color layered within the glass. The piece was produced in the late 1980s/early 1990s during one of the artist’s trips to Sweden, where he led a glass workshop at The National College of Art, Craft & Design.
