E1000-1500 Note: A native of Lyon, New York, Mary Clare Sherwood moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1920, where she became influential both as an artist and teacher. Sherwood studied at the Art Students' League with William Merritt Chase and Alden Weir and at Woodstock with Kenyon Cox. In Vicksburg, she chaired the Art Department at the All Saints College, while maintaining an active career as artist. She regularly exhibited at the Southern States Art League, National Association of Woman Painters and Sculptors and Southern States Art League. In this painting, Sherwood turned to the familiar world of life in Mississippi by painting the activity around a small corner store.
