Mary Clare Sherwood (American/Mississippi, 1868-1943), 'Highwater', oil on artist board, signed and dated ''27' lower right, inscribed in ink 'This picture was painted by Mary Clare Sherwood and verified by Rev William T Sherwood in whose collection it descended Rhoda G Sherwood' en verso 8.25in x 10.25in E2500-3500 Note: A native of New York, Mary Clare Sherwood settled in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1920, where she became influential as both an artist and teacher Sherwood studied at the Art Students' League with William Merritt Chase and at Woodstock with Kenyon Cox From 1920 until her death in 1943, Sherwood taught at Vicksburg's All Saints College Maintaining an active career as an artist, she exhibited regularly with the Southern States Art League, National Association of Woman Painters and Sculptors and Mississippi Art Association. In the painting 'Highwater' Sherwood depicts the rising waters of the Great Mississippi River Flood of 1927 The levee collapsed at Mounds Landing in the Mississippi Delta and flooded an area extending 60 miles to the east and 90 miles to the south She captured the historic moment after the crevasse and the rising of the water up to treetops lining the shore.
