Description:

Mary Katharine Loyacano McCravey (American/Mississippi, 1910-2009), "Two Girls Picking Wildflowers in a Mississippi Meadow", oil on canvas, signed lower right, "Herb's Frame Shop, Jackson, MS" label en verso, 18 in. x 24 in., framed. Note: Mary Katharine Loyacono McCravey was an iconic Mississippi artist known for her unique blend of impressionism and abstraction in otherwise traditional landscapes. Her skillful use of light and shadow are evident in the work offered here, depicting two girls picking wildflowers in a Mississippi meadow. McCravey studied at the University of Chicago, Art Institute of Chicago, University of Colorado, and the Art Colony of Taos, NM. Well-known as both an artist and an educator, McCravey taught and inspired many of Mississippi’s most accomplished artists, including William Dunlap. While teaching at Central High School in Jackson in the mid-1940s, she was invited to exhibit and sell her works along with other local artists, signing these early paintings “Loyacono.” The demand and interest in her work continued to grow over the ensuing decades, and in 2004, McCravey received the 2004 Mississippi Arts Commission’s Governor’s Excellence in the Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement.
