Provenance: Handwritten note references Terra Museum of American Art, Chicago. Note : Mary Fairchild, the American-born, French-trained artist from Connecticut, is best known for her mural, Primitive Woman, the companion work to Mary Cassatt's Modern Woman for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 Sometimes known as Mary MacMonnies (wife of sculptor Frederick MacMonies) she eschewed her first husband's name after their divorce. She is generally known for her bright, impressionistic palette; Fairchild occasionally painted in darker hues for portraits, as is evidenced in the current lot."
