Description:

Maud Earl (British/American, 1864-1943), "Terrier Pup with Discarded Cigar and Boot Scraper", 1907, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, 16 in. x 20 in., framed Note: During the late 19th and early 20th century, when dog breeding and competitions were growing in popularity, Maud Earl painted some of the finest breeds of her day. Known for her ability to capture not only the specfic physical attributes but also the distinct personality of her canine subjects, Maud Earl was commissioned by important breeders and judges of dog shows. Perhaps her most noted patrons were members of the British Royal Family, including Queen Victoria and Kathleen, the Duchess of Newcastle. The painting offered here illustrates one of Maud Earl's most iconic breeds, which she featured in a solo show in London titled "Terriers and Toys". Reference: Secord, William. A Breed Apart, Woodbridge: Antique Collectors' Club, 2001.
