Maurice Millière (French, 1871-1946), "The Passionate Shepherd", 1903, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, 28 1/4 in. x 35 1/2 in., in a giltwood frame Note: This and the following painting depict scenes from the popular 16th c. lyric poem "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" by Christopher Marlowe (English, 1564-1593). The posthumously published work is a pastoral idyll, extolling the delights to be found in the natural world.
