An American Gothic Carved Mahogany Bureau Bookcase, c. 1830, attributed to Meads and Alvord, New York, foliate stepped cornice, arched frieze, columnar supports flanking glazed doors, fitted desk compartments, pull out baize lined writing surface, height 95 in., width 48 in., depth 24 in Illustrated: Sherrill, "Living with Antiques", The Magazine Antiques, (May 1976), p. 1032; and Calloway, Obsessions: Collectors and Their Passions, p. 60. Note: The proportions, flat cornice and distinctive drawer configuration on this secretary is very similar to that on a secretary attributed to the Albany New York partnership of John Meads and William Alvord (active 1824-1835) and conserved by the Baltimore Museum of Art (acc.1989.616).
