Description:
Meyer Straus (California/New Orleans, 1831-1905), "Forested Mountain, Northern California", oil on canvasboard, signed lower right, 15 3/4 in. x 19 1/8 in, unframed.
- Notes: Note: After immigrating to the United States from Germany, Meyer Straus traveled extensively throughout the United States and painted Louisiana scenic commissions from 1869-1872 Straus spent the latter half of his career dedicated to fine art painting, working from his Montgomery Street studio in San Francisco. He took trips to Yosemite, Siskiyou County, Aspen and the Monterey Peninsula, all of which provided him with ample inspiration and subject matter. The mountain peaks and conifers rendered in the painting being offered here are attributes of both the Sierra Nevada and Shasta-Trinity National Forest regions of Northern California. Straus is the only known painter of the 19th century to have depicted Trinity Alps' Mt. Eddy. Interestingly, Meyer Straus' paintings of the Pacific coast were sold in New Orleans, 1891, at Grunewald Hall.
