Lot 158
Modeste (Max) Carlier (Belgium, 1820-1878), "Still Life of Daisies and Roses", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 31 1/2 in. x 27 1/2 in., in an elaborate painted wood frame. The director of the company caught him sketching one of his fellow miners; he was so impressed by what he saw, he decided to fund Carrier's studies at the Art Academy of Mons. In 1836 the young artist moved to Paris, initially residing with his maternal uncle who helped him obtain a position painting decorative panels on carriages. Carlier was eventually able to convince his uncle to allow him to attend evening art classes at l'École des Beaux-Arts à Paris. After completing his studies, Carlier spent several years in Rome before returning to Belgium where he was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome. Napoleon III appointed him Imperial painter, but Carlier was unable to fulfill that role because of the Franco-Prussian War. In 1878 the Belgian Government commissioned the artist to create four paintings for the Palais des Academies, but his health failed before he could proceed beyond the initial sketches. Reference: Bénézit. Dictionnaire des Peintres, Librairie Grund, 1976, vol. 2, p. 528. Note: Born into a poor family, Carlier was sent to work at the local colliery at the age of 11
