Ill.: Kessel, Joseph and Jean Kisling. Kisling. New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1971, no. 73, p. 244. “Kisling loved life and life loved him. He made others love life. The power of his paintings hold no other secret.” – Joseph Kessel, Member of the Académie Française Note: Born 1891 in Krakow, Poland, Moïse Kisling displayed an early and impressive talent for painting and was encouraged by his instructor at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, Joseph Pankiewecz, to move to Paris, where he insisted the only “good paintings” were produced. Thus at the age of nineteen, Kisling found himself arriving at the Gare de l’Est, where he was immediately besotted with Paris and thrived in a studio in Montmartre, then later in Montparnasse. Kisling was surrounded by the Bohemian influences of his fellow artists and neighboring writers and poets, who christened him the “King of Montparnassians.” In 1937, the Galerie Guy Stein hosted an exposition of Kisling’s paintings which “sparkle[d] like a fireworks display” according to André Warnod who reviewed the display for Le Figaro. Among this dazzling array were the two paintings offered here, each currently still with its exhibition label. In the winter landscape, Notre Dame peeks through the trees located in the park on the east and south sides of the building. This unique angle of the famous cathedral lends an air of intimacy to one of the most important monuments of Paris. The still life, a bouquet of dahlias, is painted with thick impasto perfectly mimicking the rich surface of the flowers. In each canvas, Kisling’s masterful execution of color and texture are on full display, and the passion of the artist is conveyed through every brushstroke. Ref.: Kessel, Joseph and Jean Kisling.
